CLUTE - There's plenty of optimism surrounding this season's football team at Brazoswood.
The Buccaneers were very young in 2008, but still contended in most games. And with a group of experienced and battle-tested players returning to the field this year, Brazoswood is thinking about a trip back into the playoffs.
There are 15 starters back for the team, including some of the big men who battle in the trenches with four players returning on the offensive line and three on the defensive line.
Another key starter back with the Buccaneers is senior quarterback Chase Matzke. It's the first time the Buccaneers return a starting quarterback since J.D. Ritchey in the 2002-03 seasons.
In 2008, Matzke ranked third in District 24-5A, completing 65 of 125 passes for 915 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions.
Senior tight end Bradley Peters led the Bucs last season with 15 catches for 202 yards with one touchdown. Also back at receiver are seniors Matt Buegeler (five catches, 64 yards, one touchdown) and Alec Cato (five catches, 65 yards).
While Brazoswood has key players returning in the passing game, the squad will need to replenish its trademark power running attack that gained 1,802 yards last season. Having the core of the offensive line back will help, but the team's top three runners last season were all seniors and combined for 1,526 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The defense will be led by end Dartwan Bush, a first team all-district selection last year, and junior linebacker Clarence Green, a second-team pick. The team must improve on that side of the ball after allowing 312 yards a game in 2008.
Of the 61 players listed on Brazoswood's varsity squad, 37 are seniors.
That's promising for the Bucs after missing out on the postseason last year with a 3-6 record, losing four District 24-5A games by a combined 10 points. The Bucs lost 24-5A games to Clear Brook (28-27) and Clear Lake (21-20) by one point, Dickinson (13-10) by three points and Clear Springs (12-7) by five points.
Brazoswood opens the season Friday at Hopper Field against the Class 4A El Campo Ricebirds.
